How Does Dental Insurance Work?

The aim of dental insurance is to keep serious oral health hazards from developing by incentivizing regular preventive attention. When you visit our dental office there are some services that are completely covered by your insurance especially if we participate in your plan (more on that below). For any treatment you need to cover a portion of, you will simply pay the amount you owe at the time you receive services and then be on your way. Then, we will take care of the paperwork and ensure we receive the full payment from Delta Dental later on!

What Does Delta Dental Insurance Cover?

Most dental insurance plans fully cover the following preventive services:

  • Two checkups annually
  • Two cleanings annually
  • One set of X-rays annually
  • Possibly topical fluoride treatments and/or dental sealants for children

During your twice-annual checkup, we will examine your teeth and gums for oral health hazards like cavities, gum disease, worn dental work, an oral cancer exam is performed and other problems requiring attention. Your dental insurance will cover the large part of any necessary restorative treatments, like fillings, root canal, extraction, and crown/bridge. For cases of tooth loss, however, dental implants are usually not covered under dental insurance.

How Can I Make the Most Out of My Dental Insurance?

Don’t let your dental insurance benefits slip away because you are unsure of what you are eligible for under your plan. To benefit from your investment, make sure you schedule and attend two checkups and cleanings per year. These appointments are truly key to healthy, long-lasting smiles -- and since they are completely covered by your insurance, you don’t really have any reason not to come see us every six months!

We also want you to keep something else in mind. While your dental insurance is a great benefit for oral health, we advise patients to make decisions based on what’s best for their smiles rather than being guided solely by what’s covered under insurance. We will talk you through all your options to help you make the decisions that are best for your oral health.
